Faculty Awards 2024

Graduate Award of the Friedrich Schiller University

Alexander Koelzer, M.Sc. Geosciences

  • Title of the master's dissertation: "Numerical Sumlation of Coupled Fluid and Heat Transport in Sedimentary Basins with Heterogenous Layering"
  • Supervisor: Prof. Dr Nina Kukowski

Throughout his studies, I got to know Mr Koelzer as a very versatile, motivated, determined and very independent student. As early as his BSc Geosciences degree programme, he chose his required elective modules in such a way that he focused on Mathematics and Physics in addition to a broad education in Geosciences. This benefited him as part of his master's dissertation, for which Mr Koelzer carried out 4D coupled thermal-hydraulic numerical simulations to understand the thermal anomaly near Bad Langensalza in the Thuringian Basin - for which he tested the influence of a number of physical parameters and boundary conditions. In addition to his studies, Mr Koelzer worked very successfully as a tutor for several years, where his enjoyment and interest in supporting exercises, for example, was clearly evident. Since completing his degree in Earth Sciences-Focus: Geophysics, which he graduated with top marks, he has dedicated himself to his doctorate at the University of Utrecht (Netherlands), laying the foundations for an academic career.

Prof Dr Nina Kukowski

The President's Prize for Outstanding Achievement is donated by the Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The award ceremony took place as part of the welcome ceremonyExternal link for new students on 24 October 2024External link.

Doctoral Thesis Award of the Friedrich Schiller University

Dr Karl Michael Ziems

  • Title of doctoral thesis: "High-frequency light-matter interaction in atoms and molecules"
  • Supervisor: Prof. Dr Stefanie Gräfe, Institute of Physical Chemistry

The doctoral thesis prize is donated by the Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The doctoral thesis prizes of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena 2024 were awarded as part of the Schiller Day ceremony on 28 June 2024 de.

Lucas Gregor, M.Sc. Chemistry

  • Title of the master's dissertation: "Total Synthesis of Mycofactocines"
  • Supervisor: Prof. Dr Ivan Vilotijecić, Institute of Organic Chemistry and Macromolecular Chemistry

Lucas Gregor is a truly exceptional chemist in the making. His commitment to studying any topic in detail and pushing the limits of understanding of organic chemistry is not seen often. In his thesis, he has set the foundation for the development of tools that will shine light on the roles mycofactocins play in mycobacteria with the ultimate goal of identifying new drug candidates and targets for development of new treatments against mycobacterial infections. He doesn’t back off from a challenge and, with his strong motivation and perseverance, I am confident that he will continue on the path of success during his doctoral studies.

Prof Dr Ivan Vilotijecić

This prize is sponsored by the Stiftung Nanotechnologie.

Doctoral Thesis Award Chemistry

Dr Josefine Meurer

  • Title of doctoral thesis: "Shape-memory polymers based on reversible supramolecular interactions"
  • Supervisor: Prof. Dr Ulrich S. Schubert, Institute of Organic Chemistry and Macromolecular Chemistry

This prize is sponsored by the Deutschen Stiftung Zukunftsgestaltung.

Dr Meurer was an outstanding doctoral student and I am very pleased to have supervised her during her doctorate. She is characterised by a high degree of chemical and scientific creativity and was thus able to gain profound insights into shape memory materials. She was not afraid to pursue challenging synthesis and strategies, always in pursuit of scientific knowledge, and for this reason she is the ideal recipient of this year's Faculty of Chemistry Doctoral Prize.

Prof. Dr Ulrich S. Schubert

Graduate Award Geosciences

Hannes Stengel, B.Sc. Biogeosciences

  • Title of the bachelor's dissertation: "Elemental Distributon in tidal-facies-escape structures of the Archean Moodies Group, Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa"
  • Supervisor: Prof. Dr Christoph Heubeck, Institute of Geosciences

Hannes Stengel combines intellectual quality with a high degree of self-discipline, curiosity and a structured approach. He was soon finished with the "compulsory programme" on the micro-XRF scanner, so he quickly produced further results of the highest quality using Raman spectroscopy. In the discussion, Mr Stengel knew how to critically evaluate data and publications, recognise appeal|objections and omissions and track down the unknown. The results, which he revised quickly and easily, have since been published in a respected international scientific journal. It almost goes without saying that Mr Stengel is always extremely polite, punctual, reliable and well prepared. He is well on the way to a promising scientific career. Congratulations from the bottom of my heart!

Prof Dr Christioph Heubeck

This prize is sponsored by the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Geowissenschaften Jena.

Doctoral Thesis Award Geosciences

Dr Phillipp Balling

  • Title of doctoral thesis: "Structural evolution of the central part of the External Dinarides fold-and-thrust belt"
  • Supervisor: Prof. Dr Kamil Ustaszewski, Institute of Geosciences

In his doctoral thesis, which he completed summa cum laude, Philipp Balling focussed on the structural and tectonic development of the central segment of the external Dinarides in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Thanks to his meticulousness, perseverance and attention to detail, he was able to gain new and sometimes surprising insights into this region. He has also helped to revise existing opinions about the geodynamic development of the Dinarides from the early Neogene (around 20 million years ago) to the present day. Philipp is now not only a sought-after contact at our institute, but is also increasingly in demand as an assessment|assessment report|review and invited speaker.

Prof Dr Kamil Ustaszewski
