Key research topics

The Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences combines in an outstanding way topics and working methods of the natural sciences with those of the humanities, social sciences and economics.

The main structural pillars of the research activities are the institutes including their working groups and the inter-faculty research centres. Our scientists are involved in numerous strong research projects, both in the context of coordinated programs and research consortia, as well as individual funding. The basis for the scientific successes is the close network of local, national and international partners in science and industry.

A considerable part of the research projects at the Faculty is integrated in the three profile lines Light-Life-Liberty of the Friedrich Schiller University. Members of the faculty are represented in all three coordination committees of the profile lines. The Faculty also participates in both excellence institutions located at the university: the Excellence Graduate School Jena School for Microbial Communication and the Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse.

The main research areas include:

  • Biophotonics and diagnostics
  • Innovative materials and technologies, Soft Matter
  • Chemical biology and bio-geo-interaction research
  • Energy and Environment
